Katsucon 2013 - In Review

Dubbed the Ultimate Lobby Con, Katsucon had an extremely large number of cosplayers. Possibly 20% higher than your average con. The gorgeous Gaylord Convention Center boasted quite the canvas for photo ops and interaction.

Surprisingly, for those who didn't want to attend panels, the only thing the pass got you was access to the insanely busy merch room. I did manage to pick up some swag while in there and enjoy looking at the weapons and attire.

Friday Night: When arriving, the con wasn't nearly as busy as I anticipated. But, it was fun nonetheless. Got to have dinner with Batman and Wolverine, following a run in with the police who insisted that Batman remove his mask while outside. Really people? It's friggin' Batman! Go hassle the Joker for his ridiculous amount of makeup.

Wolverine is Tech Saavy, and I'm a nerd.             Super excited to see another Ivy!

                          Amy Pond                                              The Formal Batman

Wolverine RAWR!                              Batman had to excuse himself
                                                                                  to take care of business

Saturday: Saturday was packed!!!! TONS of people. Definitely more of what I expected. There were so many people taking pictures and everyone had smiles on their faces. I met some amazing cosplayers, and loved the different takes people had on their character. I was also in Doctor Who heaven. So many doctors, so little time. So, we all spent the day being mauled by paparazzi and admiring the artwork all around us. P.S. It was freaking cold outside! Oh, and Slenderman spent much of the afternoon messing with people in a glass elevator. I giggled every time I passed them. Saturday night we donned our formal cosplay attire and went to a couple of convention bars. I met up with Bane and had quite the epic impromptu photoshoot. We definitely looked like we were up to no good. Oh, and Doctors! Did I mention the Doctors? Swooooon.

Batman and Ivy.

Love collaborative photos. Brilliance! This Harley was to Die for.

The Blonde, The Brunette, and The Redhead. Be afraid.

That's what he gets for stepping foot in my garden.

One of my favorites.

Batman!!!

The ultimate fight in regeneration.

Poison Ivy is the new companion. YES! Great 10th isn't he?

Captain America. Closest I've seen to the movie. Wow.

Xmen trouble.

Mega(Wo)Man. This was killer!

Minecraft cameo.

I love this because it shows how a person can interpret and mold the same character. Fantastic Boys!

Venom Deadpool?? I say YES YES YES!

Best group photo of the con, IMO. Assassin's! (Now I want a hoodie.)

And just in case you were still worried about Waldo. Don't worry.
We found him.
He's now locked up in Arkham.

The Nightlife

YOU! You want to go party! Oh, yes you do!

Come along Bane, darling. There's a world to run.

Who said Bats can't dance?

Wonder why everyone else at the bar suddenly disappeared?

The Kool Kids table.

This is how the Wolverine does formal. I'm thinking yes.

Ivy Photobomb! WHAT!

Sunday: After a LONG night of hanging with the heroes and villains, we headed back to the con. I was still tired and sore from the rather constrictive Ivy, so I went with my signature sexyGEEKGirl tee and converse. A girl can't go wrong with a good pair of converse. I did some great interviews, which you will see soon and tooled around talking to some other cosplayers. We ran into "Old Wolverine" and couldn't help but get a generation pic of three Wolverines. I also got to talk to a great new friend who was experiencing her first con. I think she's hooked. Late afternoon I headed home, exhausted and in disbelief that the weekend had come to an end.

Good morning. What time is it? Time for coffee?

The hallway carpet was quite comfortable and pretty.
Thankfully no one minded me laying in the middle of the floor.

Come on Logan, put a little more effort into it.
He didn't even bother to break out the claws.

But, Slenderman was still doing his thing.

The most badass Hello Kitty ever.

Xmen Generations. Yeah, he's still badass with gray hair.

SO, to say the least, I had an epic weekend. So many wonderful new friends and connections. Such eye candy. It was a blast.

Poison Ivy.

Cosplay pics are in.......

Thought I'd share a few with you.

Don't mind me. I'm running away with the Doctor. You all knew it would happen.

As you can see, the costume ended up being pretty darn intricate. Thought I'd also share a bit of the development.

Costume breakdown:

Green and Black corset: purchased at corsetdeal.com and hand embellished with leaves and rhinestones

green pixie dress: purchased on Amazon and straps cut into halter.

Green three tiered bustle skirt: custom made on Etsy.com.

Green tights: Amazon.

Black knee high boots: Mine. (a must have item for any cosplayers)

Green leaf boas (2): Michaels Arts and Crafts

Green Fingerless gloves: Amazon.

Green jeweled bracelets: AC Moore

Red Wig: Amazon

Fur coat: Already had. (Reminded me of the gorilla suit Uma Thurman wore in the movie.)

What do you all think? How to do put your cosplay together?

Stay tuned for interviews and more coverage of Katsucon 19!

Gamer Girl: A review of Dishonored.

I came across this amazing Gamer Girl who wanted to share her reviews with me. Gamer girl's are rarely taken seriously, as they're somewhat of a "mystical being" that few actually get to meet.

So, here is the lovely Christine. She writes for www.gamingopinions.com

If you're interested in more of her reviews, check it out!

Thanks Christine!

Dishonored:

I was a little late to the game (no pun intended) with Dishonored, being side tracked by other big releases like Assassin's Creed 3 and the last few episodes of The Walking Dead. So it didn't make its way into my Xbox 360 until more recently. But with all the promising things I had heard about the gameplay, I felt it was better late than never to experience the stealth game everyone had been talking about.

Dishonored gets you into the story quickly; you are the bodyguard of the Empress of Dunwall, but quickly spiral into the role of infamous assassin when you get framed for her murder. You are set out to find her kidnapped daughter, who is the rightful heir to the throne, while taking out corrupt men who stand in your way.  This all happens within the first five minutes of the game; there's no playing around with setting up the plot.

Your first foray into the sneak-tastic experience of Dishonored is escaping from prison. The controls are a little strange at first; X is your action button, different from the usual use of A in most games. A let's you jump instead, so I did a bit of jumping instead of grabbing or opening for the first 10 minutes.
Going into sneak mode is as easy as crouching with your left stick, but I found issue with the way it alerts you that enemies can see you. Breaking line of sight keeps them from outright attacking, but when I'm in a more open environment, there's no indicator of whether light levels help me, or why one guard seems to not notice me 2 feet away but another spots me yards away.  They do have levels of awareness, represented over their heads as little squiggly lines, but it just isn't enough.  I found myself in hand to hand combat a lot more than I wanted to be.

However, once you get your supernatural powers, things get a lot more fun. Blink is the first power available to you, which lets you teleport short distances, making it much easier to sneak by guards or get away if they are on your tail. Other powers like possessing people and animals and slowing down time make the gameplay a lot more diverse.

Speaking of diverse, the maps for the game have varying routes to complete your mission. You can sneak through a storm drain, head up over rooftops, barrel straight through guards or get to your target through connecting buildings, all within a single map. It definitely speaks to the replayability of the game.
The graphics themselves are interesting, similar to Bioshock's slightly surreal/cartoon-like appearance. In fact, a lot of the game reminds me of Bioshock but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The style, the powers, the town, all very reminiscent of the world of Rapture but it still has it's own touches to make it unique enough.

Overall, Dishonored is a fun experience and perfect for someone who really loves a variety of choices in gameplay. While the story isn't very strong, the game clearly isn't about that. It's about sneaking, snooping and killing in any manner you can think of and it's a lot of fun when you accept it for what it is.

If you haven't tried it yet.......go get it! You won't be disappointed!
