The Hobbit!
“Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back and home to bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!”
-J.R.R. Tolkien
Enough said.
I'm sure by now, most of you geeks and geek goddesses have seen the great Tolkien theatrical interpretation that is The Hobbit. I've read it many times as a child, and was over the moon to see it finally come to life in imax 3D! SWOON!
The Good: The graphics and frame work were second to none. The characters and introduction to the world we know and love were gratifying and a gave a sense of comfort ability and excitement. Being given that "AHA" moment in seeing how things came to be in the Lord of the Rings trilogy was what I was looking for.
The Bad: With the new filming style by Peter Jackson, at times the frame work was difficult to watch and I found myself having to remove my 3D glasses once in a while to refocus. I would have liked to have gotten a bit more understanding of who the 13 were in the first, nearly 3 hour, movie. Instead, Jackson only introduced a couple of characters properly. Character connection is important in building a story line and understanding the creators reasoning in having them there.
The Ugly: Okay, I think I've already heard it many time. It was SO long! The first hour was painfully slow. While I understand Jackson's desire to carefully set up the adventure, I feel that an hour was a bit overkill. There were also points in the movie (frequent points) that the camera slowed down, drawing out the scene. It's great for epic effect, but not when used so often.
So, yeah. Overall, I totally dug it. How do I know I fully did? At the end of the movie I was left going "WHAT??? OH COME ON!!!" when the credit began to roll, because I wanted to see what was going to happen next.
**Oh, and Gollum still stole the show!
"We's like to thank the academy, precious..."
And now, we wait. Until the end of the year to see where the journey takes us....
What did YOU think of the movie?
Cheers,
